Summary
The New York Mets won the first Subway Series of the season against the New York Yankees 7-6 in 10 innings. The Mets had runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the 10th, and rookie Carson Benge hit a chopper over the head of Yankees reliever Tim Hill, allowing Marcus Semien to score the game-winning run. The Yankees had a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the ninth, but the Mets tied the game on a home run by Tyrone Taylor. The Yankees struggled on a nine-game road trip, going 2-7, and will now face the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays on a seven-game homestand.
Our Reading
The game followed a familiar script.
The Mets had to come back from a deficit, just like they always do.
Taylor’s home run was the spark they needed, and Benge’s chopper was the final nail in the coffin.
Bednar’s blown save was the perfect example of the Yankees’ struggles on the road trip.
The Mets’ resiliency was on full display as they fought back to win the game.
This one felt recognizable early.
