Summary
Manny Machado, the San Diego Padres’ third baseman, is struggling at the plate, batting just .175 with 11 home runs and 32 RBIs. He blames analytics for his struggles, saying there are too many stats and numbers to keep up with. Machado wants to go back to the “old-school” approach of “see ball, hit ball.” The team is currently on a 1-9 slump and trails the LA Dodgers by eight games.
Our Reading
The habit gets a new name.
Blaming analytics for a slump is the new “I’m just not seeing the ball well.” Machado’s postgame rant is just the latest example of a player struggling to adapt to the game’s evolution. The “see ball, hit ball” approach sounds simple, but it’s not that easy when you’re facing 100mph fastballs and wicked sliders. Maybe it’s not the analytics, Manny, maybe it’s just you.
