House GOP Unveils New Bills to Combat Healthcare Fraud
House GOP lawmakers are introducing new bills following a report that estimates hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars are lost to healthcare fraud annually. The report, released by the House Energy & Commerce Committee, highlights vulnerabilities in federally subsidized healthcare programs, particularly Medicaid and Medicare. It notes that the Government Accountability Office estimated $233 billion to $521 billion in fraud occurs each year. The report also states that federal healthcare programs accounted for 24% of federal spending in 2024.
Republicans Focus on Closing Loopholes and Holding States Accountable
House Republicans are rolling out 14 bills aimed at closing loopholes in healthcare programs, reducing bureaucracy, and encouraging states to recoup lost funds. The legislation includes measures to improve fraud detection, enforce anti-fraud rules, and hold states accountable for allowing fraud. One bill would require states to designate a single role for internal financial controls in Medicaid programs, while another would mandate annual reports on potential fraud vulnerabilities.
Medicaid Spending Rises and Fraud Concerns Grow
The report notes that Medicaid spending accounts for an average of 30.7% of state budgets and has increased significantly in recent years. States like New York and California are expected to see substantial cost increases. The report warns that the size and complexity of federal healthcare programs make them susceptible to fraud, including provider fraud and transnational criminal activity. It also highlights cases where foreign groups have exploited U.S. healthcare systems to steal taxpayer dollars.
White House and Trump Administration Also Target Healthcare Fraud
The Biden-Harris Administration has pushed for “watershed” fraud-fighting reforms in Congress, while the Trump administration has prioritized healthcare fraud crackdowns. Vice President JD Vance announced the removal of 760,000 Affordable Care Act enrollees over fraud claims. The Department of Justice has also launched operations targeting foreign fraud schemes, including a case involving Russian organized crime actors billing over $10 million in false claims.
Public Concerns Over Rising Costs and Fraud
As millions of Americans struggle with high living costs, the report underscores the impact of healthcare fraud on taxpayers and healthcare access. House Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Brett Guthrie stated that every dollar stolen by fraudsters is a dollar not spent on healthcare for those in need. The report emphasizes the need for stronger enforcement and accountability to protect federal programs and ensure taxpayer dollars are used effectively.
