Our Reading
The announcement sounds ambitious.
Google is touting its growing user base, but we’ve seen this before. The company is rebranding its services and reaping the benefits of already existing features. Google One is essentially a rebranded Google Drive, and YouTube Premium is just a rebranded ad-free YouTube experience.
The company’s focus on “expanding” Google One’s features is just a euphemism for adding more storage options and management tools. Meanwhile, YouTube Premium’s main selling point remains its ad-free experience, which users have had access to through third-party services for years.
Google’s growth can be attributed to its vast user base and the company’s ability to rebrand existing services. This isn’t innovation; it’s just iterative progress.
Let’s not forget that this is just a rehashing of the same old ideas with a new coat of paint.
