Source: The Points Guy

Summary

American Airlines introduced its Flagship Suites on the Boeing 777-300ER, replacing the Flagship First cabin with 70 lie-flat seats. The upgrade includes a larger premium economy section and improved in-flight technology. The new layout features 44 premium economy seats, 30 Main Cabin Extra seats, and 186 main cabin seats. The airline plans to retrofit all 777-300ERs by 2027, with the new cabin available on routes to London, Buenos Aires, and other international destinations.

Our Reading

The escape is carefully planned.

American Airlines reconfigures its 777-300ER with 70 business-class suites and 44 premium economy seats.

Passengers get lie-flat beds, privacy doors, and upgraded tech on flights to London and Buenos Aires.

More seats mean more people can access premium comfort, but not all will get the same space.

The new cabin is a calculated move to match competitors, not a spontaneous upgrade.

American’s Most Premium Plane Yet

Boarding American’s newly-retrofitted 777, one of the first things you notice is the sheer size of business class. The Flagship Suites take up two full cabins. Prior to its glow-up, this plane had 60 lie-flat seats. Now, it has 70. To fit all those flatbeds, American ditched the Flagship First cabin on this plane in favor of a far more expansive business class.

Flagship Suites on American’s 777-300ER: What to Know

The Flagship Suites on this 777 are essentially the same business-class product that American debuted to much fanfare last year on newly-delivered Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and Airbus A321XLRs. The suites are arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration. Along with the lie-flat seat and privacy doors, passengers get a few storage options, a lamp, multiple power outlets and wireless phone charging.

Premium Economy

Premium economy on this 777 is the biggest any U.S. airline offers, with 44 seats occupying five and a half rows. These recliner seats should be a great option for travelers who want some added comfort but don’t want to shell out thousands of dollars for a suite. Like most premium economy seats, this product most closely resemble domestic first-class.

Economy

In economy, some of the biggest upgrades involve better tech. Every seat on this plane (including in coach) has a 4K screen that’s pairable with Bluetooth headphones. Plus, this jet has free Wi-Fi for all AAdvantage loyalty members; the rest of American’s 777 fleet today still has legacy Wi-Fi that’s spotty and expensive to use.

Looking Ahead

This 777 is far from the only plane to get the new cabin and seats. American tells TPG it expects all its 777-300ERs to get refitted by the end of 2027. Long-term, the airline also has its smaller (and older) 777-200 planes and Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners pegged for retrofits. Safe to say, this will be the airline’s flagship long-haul cabin for years to come.
