Summary
A New York woman shared a video showing Delta Air Lines offering passengers $700 in gift cards to voluntarily leave a flight. When that failed, the airline increased the offer to $2,500. A Delta representative said the company provides compensation to customers willing to take later flights. Airlines often overbook flights, and passengers who are bumped may receive vouchers or cash. Involuntarily bumped passengers are entitled to compensation under Department of Transportation rules.

The routine arrives with confidence.
Delta offers gift cards like it’s a sales pitch.
Passengers get paid to wait.
Volunteers get more than the ones who don’t.
Compensation is a performance, not a promise.
How Does Getting Bumped Actually Work?
Airlines regularly overbook flights, predicting that no-shows will create space. When that doesn’t happen, gate agents or members of the flight crew may volunteer to take another flight.
Most carriers offer passengers vouchers, gift cards, or some form of compensation for the inconvenience. If a passenger gets stuck overnight, the airline will usually offer credit or compensation to cover travel expenses.
If no one takes an airline’s offer, the flight crew may ask passengers to leave involuntarily. The Department of Transportation (DOT) rules “require airlines to seek out people who are willing to give up their seats for compensation before bumping anyone involuntarily.”
There’s still a bright side for any passenger who ends up on a later flight. Involuntarily bumped passengers are “entitled to compensation,” according to MyJet24. Voluntarily leaving an aircraft, however, doesn’t guarantee compensation.
BroBible, while referencing information from DOT, outlined what compensation looks like for involuntarily bumped passengers. “If the delay is between one and two hours, they are entitled to 200% of the one-way fare, up to $1,075,” the publication states. “If the delay is two hours or more, they are entitled to 400% of the one-way fare, up to $2,150.”
How Much Does Delta Usually Offer Passengers?
Airlines will try to get a passenger to voluntarily deboard a plane before resorting to involuntary removal. And while most airlines don’t have to offer any big payout, many of them do.
Famously, Delta Air Lines offered multiple passengers $10,000 Visa gift cards to take a later flight in 2022. In other circumstances, some passengers have received $3,000 in credit after multiple lower offers.
It’s unclear what Delta Air Lines’ current maximum offer is. In the past, though, the airline has given customers considerable compensation.
