Delta’s Premium Push
Delta Air Lines is investing heavily in its premium cabin, Delta One, with a focus on high-end food and drink. The airline’s premium seat revenue now matches coach revenue, signaling a shift in strategy. The redesign includes a $200 Napa Cabernet, a Wagyu burger, and Blanton’s bourbon, all aimed at attracting high-spending travelers. The project is part of a larger investment, with new suites on Airbus A350-1000s starting in 2027.
Revenue Growth and Strategic Shifts
Delta reported an 18% rise in premium ticket revenue to $6.82 billion in the September quarter, while main cabin revenue rose 12% to $6.80 billion. Adjusted revenue reached $17.6 billion, up 16% on flat capacity. The airline cut its 2026 profit outlook to $5.10 to $5.60 a share, citing higher fuel costs. Despite this, the stock is up more than 15% year-to-date.
Menu and Experience Overhaul
The new Delta One menu features recognizable, nostalgic dishes done well, including a Wagyu burger, roasted sea bass, and braised lamb. Chef Simon Hulstone, with a Michelin star, said Delta wants a “Michelin mindset” for the program. The airline also upgraded its crockery to “frame” the food and introduced a new wine program with 13 selected wines from 11 wineries. Blanton’s bourbon is now available on Delta flights.
Supply and Demand Dynamics
Delta’s premium capacity grew 6% to 7% in the quarter, with premium load factors rising almost two points. The airline is not discounting fares and plans to cut main cabin seats in the fourth quarter. On the July call, Delta’s chief commercial officer said replacing a 767 with a 787 increases premium seating from 30% to over 50%. Main cabin unit revenue grew 17%, the third straight quarter of improvement.
Challenges and Ambitions
Demand that outruns capacity brings its own pressure. Stephanie Laster, a Delta veteran, called the crowding “a good problem to have.” She described designing at scale, with 10 million Delta One meals a year and kitchens around the world. The airline is also expanding its amenity kits with a Missoni collaboration and new pillows. Goswami said sleep and food are the two fundamentals of the experience, with suite doors expected on 60% of the fleet by the end of next year.
