Our reading
Stripchat’s model Sally Dinosaur was called ‘authentic’ at an awards show, which is a term that usually implies a lack of artifice—yet the entire industry is built on artifice. It’s like calling a magician’s trick ‘authentic’ after he’s already revealed the secret.
The award ceremony took place in Berlin, a city known for its avant-garde culture and historical contradictions. One can only assume the organizers were looking for a new kind of avant-garde, one that involves less clothing and more corporate jargon.
It’s not that Sally Dinosaur isn’t genuine—she’s just not genuine in the way the word is usually meant. The real authenticity here is in the brand’s five-year winning streak, which is a feat of marketing, not morality.
