Our reading

It’s one thing to hope a foreign leader loses, but it’s another to say your job would be easier if they did, especially when you’re the one representing their people. Hochul’s comment feels like a politician’s version of a passive-aggressive text: ‘I hope you’re not in power, but I still have to act like I care about your people.’

Her job is supposedly easier because Netanyahu’s policies are a headache, but she still has to act like she’s on the same team as the people who might be upset if he loses. It’s like saying, ‘I’d rather not have to explain this to my parents, but I still have to attend the family dinner.’

So Hochul’s job is easier if Netanyahu loses, but only if the people she represents don’t mind. Which they probably do. But she’s not the one making the call, just the one explaining it.
