Summary
The Ganesha High School baseball team in California was set to play in the Southern Section Division II championship game, but many of its top players and coaches were planning to attend an out-of-state camp in Mississippi instead. The team petitioned to move the game to Friday, but was denied by the CIF Southern Section. As a result, the team was prepared to field a team of backups, but ultimately all players and coaches returned in time for the game.
Our Reading
The habit gets a new name.
Ganesha High School’s baseball team is basically a travel-ball team with a high school name attached. They don’t even bother posting their stats online. Their focus is on player development for college and the draft. They’re so committed to this approach that they were willing to skip the championship game for a camp in Mississippi. The CIF is not having it, and the team is now at risk of punishment for violating a bylaw prohibiting high school athletes from competing on outside teams during the school season.
“Player development” is just code for “we’re only here for the college scouts.”
