Dabo Swinney bashed a reporter.
Chapel Fowler of The State Newspaper asked a question about Clemson’s roster construction on Tuesday. Swinney’s recruiting process has long been a topic of conversation in an ever-changing college football landscape. He has been slow to utilize the transfer portal. He prefers high school players and is loyal to those that sign onto play for the Tigers.
While commendable, it’s set the program back. Clemson lost 20 games over an 11-year span between 2012 and 2022. It’s dropped 14 games over the last three years. The Tigers went 7-6 last season despite entering as a Top 10 team. The struggles carried over into the 2026 campaign, which got off to the worst possible start.
Clemson scored the first three points of a contest with LSU. The Bayou Bengals scored the next 51. It was pure domination. Fowler’s question about roster makeup was relevant. Swinney is the antithesis of his latest counterpart. LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has taken the opposite approach to his roster management since arriving in Baton Rouge.
Kiffin brought in 44 transfers in the offseason. Swinney’s landed 17 transfers over the last eight years. The styles are different. One approach paid dividends on opening night. Fowler asked Swinney if he regretted his roster construction after a 41-point loss. His response can be seen below.

He was giddy at the opportunity to face the Tigers. You want your players to be confident. You don’t necessarily want them to throw gasoline on the fire. Georgia Southern will enter as a 23.5-point underdog in Death Valley. They will face an uphill battle in Clemson, South Carolina.
I would expect the Tigers to fix some of the issues seen vs. LSU. I’d also let things play out as this was the first game under a new offensive coordinator before making any upset predictions. This is a very small sample size. As Dabo Swinney said in his back and forth with the reporter, one game does not define a season.
The head coach hears the noise. He will look to quiet critics with a dominant showing in Game 2. Sears’ bulletin board material will undoubtedly be seen by Clemson’s offensive players and staff. We’ll see if the Tigers make the defender eat his words on Saturday night.
