Summary
A Japanese man, Wataru Takeuchi, was sentenced to a year and a half in prison for operating a website that published in-depth summaries of popular movies and TV shows, including a recap of an anime series and a synopsis of the 2023 blockbuster Godzilla Minus One. The studios behind the projects, Kadokawa and Toho, filed a lawsuit arguing that the summaries violated a Japanese law banning unauthorized adaptations. Takeuchi earned around $240,000 from ads on the website in 2023.

Spoilers are now a crime, at least in Japan. A man got a year and a half in prison for sharing too much online. The internet is a minefield of spoilers, but some people actually seek them out. This guy made a business out of it, and now he’s paying the price. The studios said he robbed them of revenue by summarizing their projects. Fair use doesn’t apply in Japan.
Spoilers are the new piracy.
