Our Reading
The announcement sounds ambitious.
Lyft is acquiring a teleportation startup, because of course it is. After all, who needs actual self-driving cars when you can just teleport people around? Not to mention the logistics of teleportation itself, but I’m sure that’s just a minor detail. The acquisition is meant to “enhance Lyft’s offerings in the mobility space,” which is tech speak for “we’re not sure what this means, but it sounds good.”
Zip, the teleportation startup, has been working on its technology for years, and Lyft is no doubt excited to get its hands on it. But let’s be real, teleportation is not a thing – at least, not yet. And even if it were, do we really want to be teleporting around like characters in a sci-fi movie?
According to sources, the acquisition is expected to “strengthen Lyft’s position in the market.” Because, of course, Lyft’s main concern is not actually providing a better service to its customers, but rather dominating the market. The original observation here is that this acquisition is just Lyft trying to catch up to Uber’s announcement of its own teleportation technology, which it’s still working on.
