Woolly Bear Caterpillar Lore
The Woolly Bear caterpillar is the larva of the Isabella tiger moth. It is known for its distinctive coloring. According to folklore, the caterpillar’s appearance predicts the severity of the winter. The number of black segments is said to represent the number of weeks of harsh weather. This belief has been around for generations.
Scientific Perspective
While folklore suggests the caterpillar can predict the weather, there is no scientific evidence to support this. The caterpillar’s coloration is more likely a result of age and environmental factors. Scientists say the pattern has no correlation with winter conditions.
