Sleep Stage Linked to Lower Disease Risk

Sleep Stage Linked to Lower Disease Risk

Source: Fox News

Summary

A study of 95,559 adults found that greater REM sleep was associated with lower risks of 83 diseases, including dementia, Parkinson’s, and heart failure. Deep sleep was linked to lower risks of seven conditions. The research, published in PLOS Medicine, used wrist accelerometers to track sleep stages and analyzed health records over nearly nine years. Six to eight hours of sleep per night was identified as the “sweet spot” for lower disease risk. However, the study was observational and could not prove causation. Experts noted limitations, including the use of wrist devices for sleep tracking and the study population’s lack of diversity.
