SPLC Under DOJ Investigation

SPLC Under DOJ Investigation

Source: Fox News

Summary

The Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) interim CEO, Bryan Fair, claims that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating the organization and possibly preparing criminal charges. The investigation allegedly focuses on the SPLC’s prior use of paid confidential informants to gather intelligence on violent groups. The SPLC has faced criticism for alleged political bias, and FBI Director Kash Patel cut ties with the organization in October after they labeled Turning Point USA a hate group.

Our Reading

Once again, the discussion returns to a familiar question.

The SPLC’s use of paid informants has become a point of contention. The organization claims it shared information with law enforcement, but not the use of informants, to protect their identity and safety. The SPLC no longer works with paid informants.

The investigation comes after the SPLC labeled Turning Point USA a hate group, which led to criticism from FBI Director Kash Patel. The SPLC’s analysis of Turning Point USA described it as a “well-funded, hard-right organization” that sows fear and exploits white Christian supremacy.

The timing of the investigation raises questions. One day before Turning Point founder Charlie Kirk was shot and killed, the SPLC published a newsletter that Charlie Kirk Show producer Andrew Kolvet described as an attack.

The investigation will likely examine the SPLC’s use of informants and its labeling of Turning Point USA as a hate group.

And so, the familiar dance between the SPLC and its critics continues, with the DOJ’s investigation adding another layer to the drama.
