A study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress found that starting statin therapy within one year of a type 2 diabetes diagnosis was linked to a 15% lower dementia risk over 10 years. The research, published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe, followed 132,585 Danish patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes between 2006 and 2019. Those who began statins within five years still had a 10% lower risk. Dr. Liron Sinvani, a geriatrician, called the findings significant and noted the benefit was mainly in reducing vascular dementia. The study was observational, so causation was not proven.
