Summary
OpenAI announced its custom inference chip, Jalapeño, built in collaboration with Broadcom. This move aims to reduce dependence on a single supplier, namely Nvidia, which has dominated the AI chip market. Google, Apple, and SpaceX have also been working on their own custom chips to mitigate single-supplier risk.
Our Reading
The announcement sounds ambitious.
OpenAI’s Jalapeño chip is the latest attempt to break free from Nvidia’s grip on the AI chip market. Broadcom is on board, and the goal is clear: less dependence on a single supplier. Because, apparently, “custom” is the new ” revolutionary”. Jalapeño joins a growing list of me-too chips from Google, Apple, and SpaceX. Nvidia’s reign might be ending, but the era of rebranding existing tech is just beginning. And, of course, it’s all about “mitigating risk”, not about following the crowd.
