Summary
President Donald Trump pardoned five former NFL players: Joe Klecko, Nate Newton, Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, and the late Billy Cannon. The pardons were announced by White House pardon czar Alice Mary Johnson on social media. The players had pleaded guilty to various charges, including perjury, drug trafficking, and conspiracy to traffic cocaine.
Our Reading
The game followed a familiar script.
Klecko, a three-time Super Bowl winner, lied to a federal grand jury, while Newton, a six-time Pro Bowler, got caught with drugs in his truck. Lewis, a Super Bowl winner, tried to set up a drug deal with his phone, and Henry, a Pro Bowl running back, ran a drug ring. Cannon, the 1959 Heisman Trophy winner, counterfeited in the 1980s.
This one felt recognizable early. The only thing missing was the excuse about how they were set up by the system.
The result wasn’t surprising by the end. It’s not like we haven’t seen this story play out before.
This pardon spree is just another example of how the NFL’s problems are bigger than the game itself.
