US Data Centers Face Stress Test Amid Extreme Weather

Source: Fortune.com

Summary

Data centers are facing a stress test due to extreme weather conditions, with 79% of global data center capacity at high risk from climate and weather elements. The US is particularly vulnerable, with parts of the country seeing a surge in new data center construction and a rise in costly extreme weather. Insurers are taking note, with Zurich reporting that severe weather is now the leading cause of loss in its US data center risk portfolio.

Our Reading

The numbers tell one story.

Data centers are having a massive year, with at least $750 billion committed to the sector so far in 2026. But that spending is running directly into a stress test nobody scheduled. The US contains some of the world’s largest and fastest-growing data center hubs, but its risk profile is sharper than most. Parts of the country that are seeing a surge in new data center construction as well as a rise in costly extreme weather include the Carolinas and Virginia. Texas, home to at least 248 planned data center projects, illustrates the tension between cheap land and sparse population making it attractive to developers, but last year’s historic floods forced sites onto backup diesel generators and cut off repair crews.

One thing is clear: the industry has not priced in the risks of a warming world. Yet.
