‘Am I Gonna Get Sick?’
Mattie started her video by speaking to her audience. She spelled out exactly what she found inside her beverage.
“I’m literally crying and throwing up because I was drinking my Coke from McDonald’s, and there’s a f— earthworm in it,” she says. “There’s a f— worm in it. Hold on. I gotta pass him the phone, so he can show you, ’cause I can’t hold it anymore and do it.”
Mattie passes the phone to another person, who films what appeared to be a dead worm inside the beverage.
The duo say they weren’t sure whether there was more than one worm in the beverage. Mattie says it was possible that the worm separated in the drink.
Later, Mattie says, “If you know me, you know that I genuinely have a f— bug phobia. This is my worst nightmare, and I keep almost throwing up, and then I can’t throw it up ’cause I’m scared of the worms coming back up and out of my mouth again. Am I gonna get sick?”
What Was In The Coke?
In the comments section, viewers tried to identify what Mattie found in her beverage.
At first, viewers said that it wasn’t a worm at all—it was mold or sludge from the machine. But other viewers agreed with Mattie’s suspicions.
“Do not search sludge worms. Thank me later,” one commenter said.
“They’re sludge worms,” another commenter added.
The content creator confirmed viewers’ guesses in the comments. She wrote, “Okay it’s called a sludge worm, I have fished it out and confirmed it IS a worm … [They] can get in the machine I guess after it rains a lot or if there’s a sewage problem.”
What Is A ‘Sludge Worm’?
Sludge worms, otherwise known as “sewage worms” or tubifex worms, are worms that usually inhabit the bottoms of lakes and rivers, according to iNaturalist. They can survive in a variety of harsh conditions, including areas with limited oxygen or natural resources.
Sludge worms are not directly dangerous to humans. They can, however, come from sewage or polluted areas. They can therefore be disease carriers, although they mostly impact fish and other natural predators. Seeing one inside a drink, however, is harrowing. Generally, any person who encounters a sludge worm inside a soda or beverage should stop drinking it immediately.
How Common Is This?
This isn’t the first time a McDonald’s customer has found a worm in their beverage. In fact, Mattie isn’t even the second or third person to experience the very same thing.
In Wisconsin, three separate McDonald’s customers found sludge worms in their drinks, according to NBC affiliate station WTMJ.
An investigation revealed that the McDonald’s location on 75th Street in Paddock Lake had “already noticed” worms coming out of a sewage receptacle from under the machine. The chain claimed that the discovery was related to a “maintenance-related issue” with beverage equipment.
A health inspector noted that damaged tiles at the McDonald’s, alongside recent flooding, may have allowed water to “siphon into components of the machine.” In response, the McDonald’s location called pest control.
Another consumer reported finding worms inside of a McDonald’s sandwich. And outside of McDonald’s, some customers at chains such as Cava and Chick-fil-A have found creepy crawlers in their salads and entrees.
