Summary
A Hawaii resident, known as “The Captain,” shares a personal story of how a dropped olive in his martini may have saved his life during a terrorist attack in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2009. He was at the Airlangga Lounge when a bartender offered to make him a drink, but a dropped olive caused a delay, allowing The Captain to leave before a suicide bomber detonated himself in the lounge. The Captain now never eats the third olive in his martini as a superstition.

The habit gets a new name.
The Captain’s martini order is now a ritual to honor the sacrifices of those who were injured and killed in the terrorist attack. He prefers his martinis “up with just a splash of vermouth and olives,” but leaves the third olive untouched. The dropped olive that day may have been a sign that changed the course of his life. The Captain’s superstition is a reminder that small decisions can have a significant impact. The “Burnt Toast Theory” is born.
Life is full of what-ifs, and sometimes a dropped olive can be the difference between life and death.
