Our reading

Kenan Thompson, a man who’s probably never had to explain a joke to a group of people who were clearly not laughing, says he’d want to ‘sit Shane Gillis down’ for a ‘real chat’ about the monologue that made the whole show feel like a lecture on social media etiquette. It’s the kind of thing you’d expect from someone who’s spent decades on a show where the only thing more important than the bit is the bit’s emotional impact. Thompson’s proposed chat sounds less like a conversation and more like a performance review, except the employee is also the one who made the entire audience feel like they were on trial. If Gillis were to host again, Thompson says, he’d be like a parent trying to fix a kid’s homework—except the kid is a comedian and the homework is a joke that accidentally made everyone uncomfortable.
