Summary

California may experience another superbloom in 2026 due to heavy winter rainfall. The state typically only experiences superblooms once every decade, but the last one occurred as recently as 2023. The best places to witness the wildflowers will be in Southern California, including Death Valley, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and Joshua Tree National Park. The superbloom is expected to peak from March to April in low-elevation deserts and possibly extend into May and June in higher elevations.

Our Reading

The escape is carefully planned.

Death Valley has already experienced record-breaking rainfall, a good sign for a superbloom. Blooms have also been spotted in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Visitors can also head to Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve State Natural Reserve, Joshua Tree National Park, and Mojave National Preserve. The superbloom is expected to peak in March and April, but hot, dry weather could deter it.

And, of course, the superbloom will be Instagrammed to death, because what’s a natural phenomenon without a few thousand selfies?
