How to Live Like a Local on Your Luxury Authenticity Break
Your package includes a neighbourhood dispute, a missed delivery and the quiet fear that your rent is going up.
Begin your authentic city break by waiting for a delivery. Your host will provide a four-hour window, a broken intercom and no further information. Do not visit the museum. Locals rarely get to do that either.
For lunch, walk past three charming restaurants to the supermarket you can afford. Buy one ingredient you cannot identify, then discover that the apartment contains a saucepan but no lid. This is your first encounter with regional cuisine.
In the afternoon, immerse yourself in local culture by attending a residents’ meeting about the bins. No translation is needed. The man holding the minutes will point at a photograph of a bin until you understand. You may leave when somebody starts discussing last year’s bins.
Your evening experience is entirely unscripted: the upstairs neighbour will move a chair. Then another chair. After a brief interval, the first chair will return to its original location. Resist the temptation to applaud; this is not a performance for tourists.
On your final morning, receive a letter announcing an increase in the rent. Your host will explain that visitors seeking an authentic local experience have made the neighbourhood more desirable. Take a moment to appreciate your contribution.
Before checking out, leave a review saying you felt like you belonged here.
The cleaner will need the apartment back by ten.
