OpenAI’s New Sales Leader

OpenAI has appointed Brian McCarthy as its new vice president of worldwide sales. McCarthy previously worked at SpaceX, where he joined through the acquisition of Cursor. He has also held leadership roles at Rubrik, ThoughtSpot, AppDynamics, and Qlik.

This is the first major hire by Dali Rajic, who became OpenAI’s chief revenue officer in August. Rajic’s position is newly created, and McCarthy will not be replacing anyone in the role.

McCarthy and Rajic previously worked together at AppDynamics from 2017 to 2018. At that time, Rajic was the chief revenue officer and McCarthy was the vice president of sales. Both were involved in the company’s preparation for an IPO before it was acquired by Cisco.

Rajic praised McCarthy for his customer focus and belief in the power of technology. McCarthy said he was drawn to OpenAI because of its vision for enterprise adoption, shared by CEO Sam Altman and others.

McCarthy will help build out the sales team and scale enterprise growth. OpenAI is competing with Anthropic in the enterprise AI market, with recent data showing its Astra model outspending Anthropic’s Fable model.
