Summary
Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner is facing criticism for his past Reddit comments, including discussions about prostitution overseas and defending men who cheated on their wives while abroad. Platner, a combat veteran, made the comments on his now-deleted Reddit account, which have been compiled into a searchable database. The comments have emerged as a liability in his bid to unseat incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Platner has attributed his online behavior to psychological trauma and “crude humor” from his time in the military.
Our Reading
As expected, the matter has reached another stage.
Graham Platner’s past comments on Reddit have become a growing liability in his Senate bid. The comments, which include discussions about prostitution overseas and defending men who cheated on their wives, have been compiled into a searchable database. Platner has attributed his online behavior to psychological trauma and “crude humor” from his time in the military. The controversy has led to Democrats distancing themselves from Platner and the National Republican Senatorial Committee criticizing his “moral depravity”. Platner has apologized for his comments, stating they do not reflect who he is today.
It’s a familiar pattern: a politician’s past comments come back to haunt them, and they attribute it to a moment of weakness or a product of their past environment.
