Summary
United Airlines has updated its Contract of Carriage to include a policy banning passengers from listening to audio or video without headphones. This policy is in response to the expansion of on-board Starlink Wi-Fi, which allows for faster internet connectivity. Passengers who fail to use headphones may be refused transport on a permanent or temporary basis. Other major US airlines do not have similar policies, but may still remind passengers to use headphones during flights.
Our Reading
The escape is carefully planned.
United Airlines offers free earbuds to passengers who forget their headphones, and its seatback screens can pair with Bluetooth headphones like AirPods. However, passengers who choose to listen to audio or video without headphones may be kicked off the plane. The airline’s Contract of Carriage also outlines other reasons for refusing service, including “riotous, disorderly, offensive, threatening, violent, or belligerent behavior.” The crackdown on electronic devices making noise inflight is not surprising, given the increasing array of ways to listen and watch content on the go.
And so, the in-flight movie becomes a test of self-control.
