Our reading

The modern traveller can apparently escape the ordinary more easily than the rewards ecosystem. A round door promises a departure from daily life; the programme attached to it reassures you that your account still has somewhere to log in.

There is a particular luxury in making a holiday look spontaneous after carefully arranging its redemption mechanism. The destination says adventure. The browser tabs say eligibility. Both can be true, although only one tends to appear in the photograph.

The converted aircraft offers an especially tidy reversal. After collecting travel rewards, you can spend a night in a plane whose great advantage is that it stays put. For once, the journey is not the destination. The former journey has a kitchen.

The unusual properties are real attractions, rather than evidence of an invented restriction or a secret charge. The comedy is that even fantasy accommodation now comes with the familiar task of choosing the right programme. You can leave the cookie-cutter hotel behind. Your points balance would still like to come along.
